Weekly Tech - April 7th of 2025
Llama 4 is out along with Docker that can now launch LLMs, SQLite still a must-have thanks to Cloudflare and Sylius is finally switching to PHPunit, ready?
Hi everyone, hope you're all fine and well?
New week, new weekly tech, this week, not too many content as some of them required extra time to being explored / tested, I'm already talking too much, ready to start?
Common knowledge
Let's start with common knowledge and Deskpad, a virtual monitor to ease screen sharing without being locked behind Meet UI or Teams bugs (you know the one I'm talking about).
Cloud computing / Linux
Small detour on the Docker side to explore the 4.40
release that brings an LLM interface (like the Ollama one), I'm not sure it's a good idea (for technical reasons mostly), especially with Ollama out.
Database
So, what's new in the database world? Well, not much this week apart from the Outerbase acquisition by Cloudflare (because why not after all, Cloudflare is offering R2, Outerbase knows SQLite, looks like a good deal).
Machine learning
Same song on the machine learning world apart from the release of Llama 4, the latest "superhero" of the Llama family, this released triggered a large discussion about the quality of the benchmarks used to test it, some say that Meta has tricked the benchmarks to make LLama 4 appears "better", some say that the benchmarks are not precise enough to test some edge cases, at the end of the day, the best benchmark is yours, grab the model, launch it, test it and see if it fits your needs (personally, I prefer Gemma but that's my POV).
PHP
So, what's new in PHP? Well, Sulu releases their own IA manifesto and Sylius finally approved the migration from PHPSpec (a good tool BTW) to PHPUnit (better, faster, easier to maintain), lastly, you'll find the slides that introduces SEAL, an unified interface for search engines like Elasticsearch, Meilisearch and more.
Rust / Go
Last topic for the week with Rust and Floneum, a local solution to run models and interact with them.
So, that's a wrap for this week, do not hesitate to comment / like if you learned something via this weekly tech, I'll see you next week for a new one, until then, have a great weekend along with a great week.
See you on Friday!
