Weekly Tech - June 9th of 2025
Reinventing the hype train, reinventing the wheel to improve it – a local-running TTS model and the Go’s design issues. Yep, there’s a lot happening this week. Ready?
Hello everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.
This week sees machine learning back in the spotlight (a topic that’s been generating considerable buzz in recent days – as you may know, I’ve been reviewing Apple’s recent paper, which is why it’s been absent), cloud computing is also making a tentative return.
Let’s get started?
Common knowledge
Let's start with Sam Altman's blog post – the ‘AI guru’ is showering us with his wisdom and foresight. I’m not going to get bogged down in pointless debates (others have already done so), and I’ll simply say that, as things stand, we haven’t reached the dawn of AGI/ASI, and that some are indulging in sweet dreams to justify massive public/private investment in their societies (which, incidentally, isn’t ‘Open’).
Database
Continuing with the database side, AWS has made pgactive available, its large-scale replication solution, a must-have if you need to move furniture and use a tested library.
Cloud computing
Returning to the classics with the Cloud, particularly Rivet, who, after encountering numerous limitations, has decided to rewrite a portion of Traefik (for the sake of it, rewriting everything) in Rust to optimize machine discovery and networking, the article delves into the real performance of Traefik and what that entails.
Finally, Apple has made a ‘house’ library available to run OCI images (compatible with Docker) directly within the OS – and, consequently, to be ‘more efficient’.
Machine learning
What’s new in the world of machine learning?
Aside from Apple breaking the dreams of companies that overpromise and underdeliver (hello OpenAI), we need to talk about what open-source is producing – and this week, a personal favorite: Vui, a local-running TTS model for generating audio (a must if you want to create bots/agents while staying on your own machines).
Also noteworthy is Memvid (which made waves with X), a library for storing the ‘memory’ of your models in audio/video files – a must if you want to avoid solutions like Redis (which cost a fortune).
Why LLMs feel smart - Youtube
Chatterbox, an open-source TTS model built to challenge ElevenLabs
Minions, a library to unit large and small LLMs while working together
PHP
Very light week on the PHP side with StrSim, a library using several algorithms (including some native to PHP) to find similarity in your strings.
Rust / Go
We end with Go and, specifically, Gauntlet – a language designed to ‘solve’ the problems of Go (while still only being compilable in Go – look for the logic…).
Here’s the roundup for this week – don’t hesitate to leave a comment/like if you feel like it. On my part, I’ll see you next week for a new roundup.
In the meantime, have a great weekend and a very good week.
See you Friday.
